Nonverbal Learning Disability (NVLD)
Most learning disabilities have a primary impact on academic performance. However, nonverbal learning disabilities (NVLD) are a distinctive type of learning disability whose unique clinical profile includes primary social deficits and executive functioning weaknesses. Frequent secondary impacts of NVLD are behavioral and emotional dysregulation–the result of being unable to interpret and understand social environments.In some cases, NVLD can look similar to an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Often there are associated learning issues, most commonly in mathematics.
NVLD can only be assessed through a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. If you or your child is presenting signs of NVLD, consult with a neuropsychologist experienced in the assessment of NVLD to determine whether testing can be beneficial.
